What’s a pangolin, you ask? It is an unusual mammal that may remind you of an armored anteater. It’s covered in hard leathery scales, makes its home in dirt and hunts for insects at night. Unfortunately, the pangolin’s exotic looks and rare status make it a prime target for the international wildlife trade. Native to Africa and Asia, half of the eight pangolin species are under serious threat, according to the World Wildlife Fund. How many exist in the wild is unknown because of their solitary and shy nocturnal nature. Like the tiger, pangolins are highly sought after for traditional medicines for skin and stomach ailments. Ground pangolin scales, taken orally, are prescribed in folk medicine for all kinds of things — to promote menstruation, lactation, to treat rheumatism and arthritis and to even reduce swelling, according to wildlife expert Rhishja Cota-Larson in the Monga Bay Times.
In China, pangolin meat is considered to be a delicacy. Leather goods made from the scaly pangolin skin are also popular. In Indonesia, pangolin fetus soup is a delicacy that many claim can increase a man’s fertility. Because pangolins only give birth to one baby per year, the hunting of these rare creatures is a serious threat to their existence. Populations in many parts of Asia have recently crashed. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) says subsistence hunting of pangolins has halted due to the high prices on the global market. A single pangolin can reportedly fetch $1,000.
